It’s Chicago Design Week! Check out Busy Beaver’s pick of the top five events to check out this week:

1. Light & Reflection

WHERE: The Chicago Artists Coalition | 217 N. Carpenter
WHEN: Tonight! 5
 – 10pm

Be sure to check out “Light & Reflection”, a group show featuring new lighting and mirror concepts in a range of technologies and conceptual ideas. Knowing the work of Busy Beaver pal Strand Design, I’m sure you’ll see a number of beautiful and sustainable objects. Designers featured include M26 Studio, Ben Salthouse, Bridget Soldan, Strand Design, Studio Murmur, and weetu.

2. The Guerrilla Truck Show

WHERE: 1052 W. Fulton Market
WHEN: Tonight! 5:30 – 9:30pm

An exhibit like no other, the Guerrilla Truck show features 50+ pop-up galleries in the backs of delivery trucks along the loading docks of Fulton Market Street. It’s for one night only, so skip tonight’s trip to the gym (like I am) and make your way to the West Loop instead.

3. CAKE (Chicago Alternative Comics Exp0)

WHERE: Columbia College’s Ludington Building | 1104 S. Wabash
WHEN: June 16th & June 17th, 11am-6pm

CAKE technically isn’t part of Chicago Design Week, but the weekend-long show features many of Chicago’s talented illustrators and comic designers. Superhero! Button-O-Matic series button artists Jeffrey Brown, Lilli Carré, Anders Nilsen, and Laura Park will be exhibiting and Busy Beaver Carrie Vinarsky will be moderating the “Low Brow, High Mesh” panel on silkscreening so it should be a fun, inspirational time.

4. Fresh Produced: Exploring the Craft of Hand-Painted Signage

WHERE: Chicago Design Museum | 700 N. Sacramento
WHEN: Exhibit runs to June 30. Check chidm.com/events for hours.

We already made mention of this exhibit on the blog yesterday, but I wanted to give an extra shout out to the local grocery store sign painters who will be exhibiting their hand-painted signage alongside the designers’ re-interpreted pieces. Go check ‘em out!

5. Roy Lichtenstein: A Retrospective

WHERE: The Art Institute of Chicago
WHEN: Exhibit runs to September 3.

This isn’t a part of Chicago Design Week either, but I’m personally seeing the Lichtenstein retrospective this weekend. The Art Institute is a long-time customer and Busy Beaver made 50,000 1-inch buttons to accompany this exhibit so I’m excited to see the pins in action. Plus, I’ll be hitting up the Doughnut Vault on the way there. I hear they have a new blueberry old fashioned— it’s gonna be a good week!
