Photo buttons have been around since the pinback was patented back in 1896– we recently wrote about an example of a turn of the century photo button catalog. Even today when it’s easy to share pictures with friends and family online, there’s still something special about creating a keepsake button with a loved one’s photo on it. Whether marking a milestone, commemorate a special occasion or simply finding a great use for a favorite embarrassing picture, photo buttons are a great way to celebrate your favorite people.
1. Vintage Pictures
Every family has albums full of pictures, and photo buttons featuring favorite vintage snapshots are a great way to breathe new life into those old shots. Dusting off Grandma’s high school portrait is sure to elicit lots of oohs and ahs from the younger generations and exclamations of “Look how young Grandma looks!”
2. Embarrassing Snapshots
A close relative to the vintage pictures idea, leafing through old family albums results in plenty of hairsprayed, bell-bottomed and otherwise goofy images perfect for creating embarrassing buttons. These shots are great for milestone birthdays, retirement parties and other events that involve a combination of celebration and good-natured ribbing. The duo above were carefully selected from a stack of amazing 70s photos for customer Molly Miner’s mother’s 70th birthday.
3. Commemorative Text
Adding text to special occasion buttons turns them into keepsakes in their own right. Text that’s celebratory, funny, nostalgic or serious will set the tone for the celebration, not to mention remind everyone just how old the birthday boy/girl really is.
3. Fun Design Elements
Adding a funny background, recalling a family joke or sharing a special nickname personalize a photo button and make it unmistakably yours. For the button above on the left, customer Brock Blazo submitted the photo of his friend with instructions for our designer to add “rays of light coming out from behind his head.” With a button like that, you know it’s going to be a good party!
