We often think of buttons as purely promotional items; after all, pin-back buttons are the perfect medium for a logo or simple advertising message. But buttons can also be a great canvas for works of art. Case in point, these 1.25″ buttons recently ordered by the University of Missouri in Kansas City Gallery of Art.
These buttons were made in conjunction with the gallery’s annual student show. Along with the regularly rotating schedule of contemporary art exhibitions featuring national and international artists, the gallery also offers a professional venue for UMKC students to exhibit their work. The button designs were created by both students and faculty members. A department-wide call was made for designs and the best submissions were selected for button production.
“We order basic promotional buttons from Busy Beaver pretty often, so we like to mix in the special edition artist buttons as a fun bonus whenever we get a chance,” says Mae McCurry, Gallery Graduate Assistant.
McCurry continued, saying “We love having a bowl of buttons on our counter for visitors to dig through, and we tend to run out very quickly. There is something about buttons that people find completely irresistible!”
The UMKC Annual Student Art Exhibition closed on August 1. For more info on upcoming shows, check out the gallery’s exhibition schedule.
