A classic canvas shoe brand preserves their roots through pin packs.
Most of us grew up owning at least one pair of canvas lace-up shoes. Many of you are wearing some right now. We’re certainly fans of this classic American style here at Busy Beaver so we were delighted to be commissioned by historic footwear brand PF Flyers.
The brand’s been through a lot of changes since its inception in 1937, but their commitment to making high-quality, classic sneakers has not waivered. Despite a few business lulls, in typical cyclical-fashion style the shoes are making a big comeback and the brand—always interested in promoting their rich heritage—thought it a great time to reward friends, loyal fans, and tastemakers with a set of vintage-logo buttons.
Designer and Brand Historian Alyasha Owerka-Moore says that for a large part of the company’s history, little giveaways were included in every shoe box: “Johnny Quest decoder ring, tiger claw whistle, arrowhead whistle, adventure compass, decals, etc.” Customers could also send in their proof of purchase in exchange for a prize.
“We figured that a pin set would be in keeping with that part of the brand’s history,” he added. For now, the pins will be distributed to friends and fans first but they hope to start a limited-edition collector series in the near future.
The brand prides itself on American-made craftsmanship and personal authenticity. Busy Beaver does, too, so we were very proud to make this distinct button pack, which features:
- The PF Flyers mascot, “Swifty Flyer.”
- An image taken from a 1950s point-of-sale card.
- A classic PF Flyers logo, which Owerka-Moore says was chosen because it “just has a great feel typographically.”
On top of all that, is there a mascot that looks more like our Busy Beaver than Swifty?
In their own words, “We’re not sure if he’s a chipmunk, half mouse, or some kind of wolf child.” Regardless of species, we think it’s safe to say him and our similarly buck-toothed beaver, Bizzy, would become fast friends.
