Who was Casimer Pulaski and why do we celebrate him? According to huffingtonpost.com, Pulaski Day was enacted in 1977 “to honor the Revolutionary War hero who reportedly saved General George Washington’s life in 1777.” The holiday also honors Chicago’s Polish-American community— the largest Polish population outside of Warsaw. So fry up the pierogi tonight and jam out to Sufjan Stevens, it’s Pulaski Day!
