We love a good play on words here at Busy Beaver– nearly everything in the production department has a nickname, from our scoring machine “Wilt Chamberlin,” to the various terms for button quantities from a “hundo” to a “grand.” So when this order of clever chemistry buttons came through recently, they definitely made us laugh. Designed by members of the Younger Chemistry Education Scholars Committee (YCES), these buttons were created as a more durable alternative to the stickers they’d used at networking events in the past.
“I printed ‘Ask me about chemistry education’ on labels at an event last year and we received great feedback,” said Stephanie Ryan, the social chair of YCES. “I wanted to print professional versions that were more durable and started looking at Busy Beaver Button Co. In the process, we were all joking about having pieces of flair. That stuck with me and while planning events for the conference I thought of incentive buttons.”
Along with an “Ask Me” buttons, three button designs were created to be used as incentives at professional development events during the Biennial Conference in Chemical Education. Participants received a button for attending each event and if they collected all three (and wore them on their lanyard) they received additional raffle tickets for a prize drawing at the end of the conference.
The buttons were a big hit at the conference. Or as the chemists would say, they got a good reaction.
