Eyes have been a popular motif for millennia (think Ancient Egyptian Eye of Horus), and lately they seem to be trending again. We’ve seen eye patterns pop up in clothing, home decorations, not to mention on buttons. Our own Carrie Vinarsky created a great eye button as part of her mini-comic for Chicago Alternative Comics Expo over the summer, and we shared button pinner Brett Manning‘s eyeball bobby pins on Instagram a few months back, too.
Around the office last week we were talking about how well the eyeball trend would translate to an oval button— it’s the perfect shape, after all, and what’s creepier than a giant eyeball staring out at you? Since this is the time of year to indulge in all things weird and spooky, we decided to give it a try.
We found a cool vintage clip art eyeball image and sized it to fit the oval button. The examples we made were printed using different special printing effects (metallic, cosmic, etc.) in a bunch of bright and crazy color combinations. My personal favorites were the black on white/white on black glow in the dark versions– they looked especially eerie in the dark.
The buttons were quite a hit around the office, with everyone asking to take one home when I was finished photographing them. A couple of Beavers even took it upon themselves to illustrate some of the many practical uses for eyeball buttons:
I have a feeling that the rest of the Beavers will be claiming the leftover buttons pretty quickly, but I snagged a couple to decorate my computer monitor this week. Tis the season for ghoulish decorations!
