Talk about feminism seems to be everywhere these days. Beyonce lights the word up giant-size at the VMAs, celebrities weigh in on the “Is she or isn’t she?” question, men wonder whether they can be (hint: they can!).
We’ve featured some of our favorite feminist-leaning buttons on the blog over the past few years, from empowering bat mitzvah button to a girl president. But none have been quite as overt (or as colorful) as the recent button pack made by comics artist Catie Donnelly.
Catie’s display packs feature four 1.5″ cosmic buttons with “FEMINIST KILLJOY” written boldy across them. The geometric rainbow-colored background takes on a gem-like appearance paired with cosmic finish. In short, the buttons are unmissable.
“There’s this cultural narrative of feminism as a movement of frumpy, sad sack women who melted all their makeup in the flames of their burning bras,” explained Catie. The buttons are push-back against this Debbie Downer image, a metaphorical “middle finger to everyone who thinks you can’t be both feminist and stylish.” Catie said, “In reality, I have never met a feminist who didn’t have an amazing sense of herself and her own personal style.”
Catie used the button packs to reclaim– and rebrand– the very term that’s often lobbed at those fighting for gender equality, feminist killjoy. “I took everyone’s favorite feminist insult as a way of saying ‘Yeah, that’s right, I’m a feminist. But my lips are on point and my legs look amazing in this fur coat that I got from furcoats.com’s online store and if you’ve got a problem with any of that you can come at me.'”
Catie originally made button sets by hand for a convention she attended this fall, but they proved to be so popular that she needed to order a larger batch. After a friend recommended Busy Beaver, she poked around the website to check out our options. “When I found out I could get them in cosmic (read: even more sparkly and ostentatious) I was sold.”
To paraphrase Emma Goldman, I want my revolution danceable and sparkly.
