Sure, summer’s over, but don’t bundle up and start hibernating just yet. October marks the start of Chicago Artist Month (October 1st through November 15th) and its first Friday in particular holds a ton of great options for those wanting to see (art) and be seen (…looking at art).
You could make a whole night of it, and we think you most definitely should. Here’s your October 2nd art-night itinerary:
Every first Friday of the month, assorted studios, galleries, and creative spaces open their doors for a Pilsen neighborhood art walk. It’s a great way to explore one of Chicago’s most creative communities, or to meet your neighbors if you live there. The event aims to put “art first,” so we put it first on your schedule.
6pm-10pm. Various Pilsen locations. Free.
While in the neighborhood, celebrate the release of Busy Beaver Button Co.’s latest Original Artist Series and get your hands on the wearable pieces of one-inch art before everyone else. This release party/artist’s reception is free and open to the public but art supply donations (benefitting youth center Yollocalli Arts Reach— a youth initiative of the National Museum of Mexican Art) are encouraged.
6pm-9pm. National Museum of Mexican Art, 1852 W. 19th St. Free.
Be among the first to see the Chicago Design Museum’s newest exhibition, New Horizon: Architecture from Ireland, in partnership with Irish Design 2015. Refreshments will be served.
6pm-10pm. Chicago Design Museum, Block Thirty Seven, 108 N. State Street, 3rd floor. Free.
Watch as over 40 artists paint murals on the interior walls of the Flat Iron building, then watch as they all get covered over in boring ol’ white paint. The event’s called Now You See It, Now You Don’t, and it’s sure to be an experience.
6pm-10pm. Flat Iron Arts Building, 1579 N. Milwaukee Ave. $5 suggested donation.
If combining contemporary art and live performances with food and drinks curated by some of the city’s hottest restaurateurs (hello Land and Sea Dept.!) sounds like a delicious time, we hope you have a ticket because this hip new MCA event is already sold out.
7pm-11pm. Museum of Contemporary Art, 220 East Chicago Ave. Ticketed.
