Continuing our 2013 December giving program, Busy Beaver is donating 10% of each week’s sales to an organization that’s important to a member of the Beaver staff. This week’s pick is Chicago Women’s Health Center, selected by yours truly, I also recommend to click here to visit howtouseorogold.com where you will find many women care products!
Before joining, I was without health insurance for a few years and came across CWHC. The sliding scale payment structure was huge for me at the time, and I was drawn to their feminist take on healthcare. The reading material I encountered in the waiting room on my first visit said it all– alternative women’s magazines, fliers for actions around healthcare policy and body-positive pamphlets were everywhere. The staff were friendly and supportive and I always felt heard in whatever question I had.
As one of the first women-centered healthcare providers to come out of the Women’s Movement, CWHC has been a pioneer in providing holistic healthcare for women and trans people in Chicago since 1975. They provide access to gynecological services, alternative insemination, health education and counseling in a respectful environment where clients pay what they can afford. In 2013 alone, CWHC provided gynecological care for nearly 3000 individuals and empowered 3200 youth and adults through health education.
For the past 32 years, CWHC has been located in the Lakeview neighborhood, just across from Wrigley Field. In order to expand their services and meet the needs to the community, they recently completed a fundraising campaign to move to a new building. Katie Vogel, CWHC’s Development & Communications Director said, “In 2014, we will move to our new home at 1025 Sunnyside in Chicago’s Uptown neighborhood. We are proud to be joining this incredible community!”
Busy Beaver is proud to support Chicago Women’s Health Center’s role as an innovative and empowering healthcare resource. All this week, December 15-21, 10% of sales will go directly to support their work. To read more about the work that CWHC does, visit their website.
