Our pals at Poetry magazine are teaming up with the Chicago Humanities Festival to bring Mr. Lemony Snicket himself to Chicago! Snicket will be in town for an exclusive book signing for his newest release When Did You See Her Last?. And not only will attendees get a chance to meet the author and have their book signed, but they’ll also score one of these fancy cosmic buttons courtesy of Busy Beaver:
Since Snicket’s signings are notorious for being up to 3 or 4 hours long— the author makes sure to sign every book and spend time talking to every person— the organizers of the event wanted a creative way to help organize the line. Fred Sasaki from Poetry came up with an idea to use numbered buttons featuring portraits of the poets Snicket selected for his recent children’s poetry portfolio to help regulate the crowd.
Artist Ana Benaroya created the artwork drawing from Snicket’s writing as inspiration for the designs. “I was a huge fan of his Series of Unfortunate Events when I was younger, and I remember the funny yet dark humor that spoke to me,” Benaroya said. “I wanted to approach these poet portraits in a way that was light-hearted enough for the kids at his book signing, but also had a bit of an edge. Poets are usually depicted only in a serious manner, so I also thought it would be nice to make their portraits more approachable.”
Benaroya and Sasaki’s choice to use our Cosmic button finish also added to the whimsy of the button designs. “The holographic finished is just too fun not to use,” Benaroya said. “It makes all the colors sing and adds that extra element of ooh, I want to wear that pin!. I think it also matched my concept and Lemony Snicket’s books, which are other-worldly and over-the-top.”
Score one of these snazzy buttons and meet Lemony Snicket this Friday, November 1 starting at 6pm. Go to chicagohumanities.org for more info.
