As a newbie to the world of children’s birthday parties, I’ve discovered that the stakes are pretty high these days to make your kid’s event the best on the block. First on the list of must have elements for a killer birthday party: swag. Enter Goldie Gareza and her son, Mateo, birthday party swag makers extraordinaire.
Goldie, a self-described DJ/graphic artist/nice person, made the first round of buttons for Mateo’s 2nd birthday featuring an image of him dropping beats wearing a pair of headphones. To celebrate his 5th birthday in 2011, Goldie harnessed some Latin Flair with “Cinco de Mateo” and 2012’s cosmopolitan 6th birthday design was based on a NYC Metrocard. This year’s button plays with the 7-11 logo in honor of Mateo’s seventh birthday.
In addition to serving as favors at the birthday parties, Mateo’s buttons are handed out throughout the year. “When people give Mateo free stuff (muffin, milk, cookies, etc) at places we frequent a lot,” Goldie said, “they become part of his ‘fan club’ and we give the buttons away. One time [his button] was on display at a coffee place and someone said, ‘Hey, that’s Mateo!'”
Feel like becoming Mateo’s newest fan? Check out his Facebook page and who knows, maybe you’ll get an invite to his party next year and score yourself an 8th birthday button of your own.
