When the pinback button was patented back in 1896, a thin layer of celluloid was what protected the button’s artwork from the elements. Today, buttons are protected by covering the printed area in a thin sheet of clear plastic mylar or laminating the paper directly. All of Busy Beaver’s buttons are mylar covered. Read on to find out why we’re big fans of the clear stuff.
1. Looks good!
Mylar-covered buttons look sleek. Mylar reflects more light than laminated buttons which makes them eye-catching and dynamic to see in person.
2. Last long!
Polyester mylar film is the most long-lasting option for button protection. Mylar is sturdy and protects your artwork from everyday wear and tear, and mylar is more durable than lamination. You can really tell when a laminated button get a scratch, but not so much with a mylar-covered button.
3. It’s green!
Mylar is in line with Busy Beaver’s commitment to green manufacturing. It contains none of the heavy metals found in some other plastics (no lead, mercury, hexavalent chromium, cadmium or phthalates). Also, after the mylar is cut to size for button making, the rest is recycled. Laminated paper cannot be recycled.
