LA Buttons: 4 LA Brands Who Create Custom Buttons

Gentle Thrills
Gentle Thrills is a brand created by LA based artist and designer, Isa Beniston, a button enthusiast who got her start by creating her own custom made buttons by hand before reaching out to Busy Beaver. Isa’s work is anything but ordinary so we here at the Dam have collaborated with her to customize her orders further so that she can add her own personal touch to each button pressed to bring her vision into reality. Isa’s work is bright, bold and makes a statement. She started with personalized buttons but you can now purchase everything from tee-shirts to decorations from her. Visit her online shop or find her work in select stores all across the country. Read more >
Princess
Maya Rudolph and Gretchen Lieberum have been paying tribute to the legendary pop star Prince since as early as 2011 with their appropriately named cover band, Princess. Their designer, Debra Matlock who replaced the Purple Rain-era typeface for Princess’s logo, says that pin back buttons were a must have for the bands custom merchandise collection. Band buttons have always been a staple in the music industry, often becoming treasured artifacts or famous symbols like Prince’s own iconic “Rude Boy” button he wears on two album covers (and now the very popular “Rude Girl” button in the Princess merch collection). Studio Number One
This LA based creative agency was created by Shepard and Amanda Fairey with a mission to change the way people experience media and the urban landscape. Custom button pins were a natural fit for one of Studio Number One’s more recent initiatives to encourage people to vote. Busy Beaver also partnered up with the agency to create designs for a live button making activity for a Post Women’s March Hang event. Button’s naturally work to initiate conversation and spread ideas, a value held among SNO’s philosophy. Read more >
Call Your Girlfriend
You can listen in on conversations between two long distance besties, Ann Friedman in LA and Aminatou Sow in Brooklyn, in the weekly podcast, Call Your Girlfriend. The two talk over everything from politics to personal shopping habits. The podcast has a shop where you can show support for them by purchasing merchandise, including sparkle buttons printed with one of CYG’s most popular theme’s: Shine Theory. Shine Theory is the idea that women should befriend one another rather than compete against each other. Learn more >
