With the recent publication of Lean In: Women, Work, and the Will to Lead, feminism is suddenly mainstream news again. Leaning in, pushing back, getting a seat at the table and having it all are all concepts currently being hotly debated amongst my friends. But I’m in my thirties— what does feminism look like to the next generation? Well, according to Maddy Abowitz, the vision includes baked goods and buttons:
Maddy said of her buttons, “At my Bat Mitzvah party, they were laid out on the tables and many, many people put them on. The most popular one was “proud to be a feminist”. The topics on my buttons are related to the talk/paper I wrote for the service part of my Bat Mitzvah, which took place in a synagogue. My topic was Jewish feminism and body image.”
With people like Maddy leading the way for the next generation, I think a lot of progress will be made in the next thirty years. And at the very least, it looks like the future will include cupcakes.
