I love picking out gifts during the holiday season; it’s always fun to go searching for just the right present to give to each of my friends and family. But while my gifts are always thoughtful, my wrapping skills can sometimes be less than desirable. (Yes, tin foil counts as wrapping paper). But this year I decided to get all Martha Stewart and make sure the presentation was as thoughtful as the gift. So rather than using my usual “write on the package with sharpie” labeling method, I decided to make these cute button-y gift tags. That way not only will my giftees receive a nice present but they’ll get a festive holiday button to wear as well! Here’s my step-by-step guide so you, too, can create your own button gift tag.
Step 1: Order Your Buttons
Since our custom buttons take a week for production plus shipping time, the first step is to get your buttons ordered! All the buttons shown in our tutorial are 1.25-inch sparkle buttons. Purchase as many buttons as gift tags you plan on making, but keep in mind our minimum order is 50 buttons.
Step 2: Print and Cut Out The Gift Tags
Design your name tags and print out on 8.5 x 11″ cardstock. Cut along the black guidelines provided with either scissors or an X-Acto blade.
Step 3: Punch The Holes
You’ll see three black circles printed on each gift. Go ahead and use a standard hole-punch to punch out those dots. The larger one is for attaching the gift tag to your package and the two smaller ones are for pinning on the buttons.
Step 4: Pin On The Buttons
Match up your sparkle buttons to the appropriate card and pin on using the two smaller holes. The locking pin should fit through the hole, so the buttons will sit flat against the front of the card.
Step 5: Decorate and Share
Address and sign the gift tags, add them to your presents, and go forth to spread holiday cheer. Your friends and family will love the extra holiday button they receive with each gift!
